A Love Affair with M/V Doulos and Books

Hello there! I have something to tell you. You might like it or hate it but you have no choice but just read it. Will you?

Books are one of the most effective learning materials in the world. It may sound old fashion nowadays but I still prefer books as a basis or a reading material. Books may be not as high tech as computers and internet but it has much more useful and more sensible information than computers and other modern technology. It may sound hard to find information in books because you hate reading but it wont kill you.

M/V Doulos is a very large ship that carries a library in it. They travel to different places and sell educational books for people. It is very old also for, if I am not mistaken, it is just two years younger than titanic. Can you imagine?

Well, getting to know books makes some kind of a bond or a love affair in it and one effective mean to strengthen that bond is no other than visiting the old boat. It was a very exciting trip. Lots of happy things happened. First, we hired jeepneys to go there. It was a very fun and noisy trip. My classmates were awfully noisy since we are packed in the jeepney. We saw the other part of Cebu. Some have been tour guides maybe because they live near those places.

When we arrived at the specific port where M/V Doulos was anchored, everybody was eager to get out of the jeepney and run to the boat. I had a frightful flight in going up because the steps of the stairs of the boat were not the typical shape we often walk on. It was some kind of oblong steps. As the stairs roused, the beating of my heart went faster and faster. It is maybe because in the stairs it shook a bit due to waves and I was afraid I might fall (though there was a little chance of falling cause it has high side blockers that prevented me from falling). The second reason I think I got nervous is the fact that I am afraid of heights and the stairs did went high enough to scare me.

Inside the boat lay the books waiting to be read. I went all over the place. I read cookbooks, fairytales, crossword puzzles and many more. I got a bit bored when I finished looking every book I liked to see so I bought Doulos ice cream and went to the alley thingy of the ship. There we saw the street and the other boats anchored in that port. We explored the comfort rooms and we found out that their water is hot. The cold breeze was so refreshing since we had a polluted ride but as I stayed longer, I felt numb with the cold and started to shiver a bit. Then, we again get bored so we pleaded Sir Elmer to let us out since we cannot go back to the bookstore if we had passed the alleyway.

After we went down We were let in again and this time we were brought to another room in the boat. Mind you, it was air conditioned. We had fun with those lectures and we are joined with another school. Then, it was time to go home. In the ride we were again very noisy and honestly, we really had fun

So, might as well have a bond on books. Don’t forget to visit M/V Doulos sometime thought it is no longer in Cebu. Lastly, please don’t mind if what I am saying does not make sense I always don’t make sense. ;-)

What the Stars and the Sky Tell Me About Life

Stars…
The very brilliant and mysterious things we see at night. Those tiny dots that light the dark sky at night is what we called stars. Didn’t you ever wonder what are they really like?
When I was a kid, I really wondered what stars are like. At first, I thought stars do really have that shape since most of our early teachings about shapes tell us that stars are decagons but as I grow and learn my first impressions about stars changed and now I knew that they are balls of gases that lie in different and very far places in this vast universe. Well, some of them are useful to us, like our sun. As we all know, perhaps, is that the sun is our major source of energy. I was a bit shocked before when I learned that the sun was really a star. I really believed that it was different.

Life…
It is probably a way of existence. It is most likely what we call in our presence here in the planet so called Earth and it is said that life is short so better use it in good means and enjoy. Well, as we have been experiencing nowadays, life is not that easy. You experience happiness, success, love but it can never be denied that we are also to feel pain, face sufferings, sacrifices and the worst part of it is death. You see, death is not that bad since it is the start of your life with out Lord but most of us feared about it cause we just over loved our presence here in this material world.

Life and Stars…
Is there any connection?
As of now, there is. Many people use stars or other heavenly bodies in predicting lives and in making money. We call it Astrology
1. As people learn to read and predict them, I still do not believe in such things for I stand with my belief that only the Powerful Being has the capacity to know the future. I see horoscopes2 and many others as some entertainment and I do not take it very seriously but it can never be denied that there are predictions that happened. Well, the stars, the sky and me tells that life is not that short. We simply wasted life that is why we say it is short for we did not make the certain things our soul really craved to do. It also shows that life is very wide and mysterious. We encounter things explainable and others that are not discovered yet. It made me see how smart and creative God is for doing such marvelous things. I realized based on my observation in the sky that life is unpredictable. Just like the skies, it may rain and we just cannot say. Skies showed me that there is really much more things I need to explore in my life.

So, hope you did a bit of thinking… If I would ask you, what would stars, skies and anything else above you shows you what life really is?

1 Study of the relative positions of the stars, moon, and the sun and the supposed influence of these on human affairs, in attempt to predict the future.
2 A representation of heavens at any time, especially at one’s birth

Reflections on Teachers and Teaching

“Teacher? They are those we see at some place called school right?”

These are commonly our first impressions. Go look at a dictionary and you will find that it means someone who teaches others or also called instructor but did it ever occur to you that it has deeper meanings? Such as second parents or guardians, somebody who you owe too much, for who you are today, someone who kept patient, molded you, and taught you that life is not that bad even if there are lots of sufferings and hardships you keep encountering. Well, better think about it…

Ever since I was young, I love to be a teacher. I can still remember how I imitate my Science teacher before. I wrote things in our wall and act as if there are kids listening to me and I often laugh remembering how crazy I look. Well, thank God all those writings are covered with paint now. Then, even now, I still love to be a teacher. Since Mr. Nazareno came to University of the Philippines High School in Visayas I kept dreaming of becoming a teacher and going to abroad and then bringing my pupils back to UP and feel proud thinking that I was once a student in this prestigious university myself. The other thing that inspires me to be a teacher is that maybe because I come from a family of teachers. My mother and my father are both teachers. Two of my uncles are teachers. My aunt is a teacher and my Grandmother was a teacher herself. Even my older cousins have taken courses in Education but they just shifted courses and got a different job. Therefore, I can say that family really influences a lot.

Then, the experience I had during the “KNOW YOUR SCHOOL DAY” Celebration was much help in fulfilling my dreams of becoming a teacher. It made me realize that being a teacher is not that easy after all. It showed me that perseverance was really needed. From just the interview, there was too much pressure. Besides that I was very hungry when I got interviewed, but I can also feel the competition and the tension on who will be chosen. Well, thank God I was chosen on being a teacher in Science C.

Being a student teacher made me a much better person. I made me more responsible in a way that I need to see to it that the students I am teaching really learned something. I also learned to be creative in the sense that I need to find different ways to make the discussions and reporting more lively so that they would always remember what they learned. So I made them jump so that the sleepiness would be gone and we also sang nursery rhymes and actions songs. We really look and sound like in kindergarten but the good thing is that we had fun. Lastly, I learned to be more cooperative. I learned to coordinate with Patrice, my co-student teacher, in many things. We agreed on the grades of the reporting and we shared the topics we need to discuss.

All in all, the activity was a success. It had molded us students to even better individuals and we learned how to treasure our beloved teachers since we experienced how difficult it is to be one.
So, have you thought about things? Well, I just hope you would also learn to love your teachers and then so realize not to be a black sheep in class. So, this is it for now… See you again and HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER VACATION!

At kinikimkim pa rin hanggang ngayon

Sabi nila, makakalimutan ko rin
Ang lahat ng mga tinagong damdamin
Pero di alam kung anong masasabi
Siguro lahat na nga ay pakunwari

Kaya upang makalimutan ko na
Pinipilit na tumingin sa iba
Pero hindi makakayang kalimutan
At pababayaan nalang dumaan

(mas wala ni sense kaysa atong usa pero antusa nalang na oiez...)
( here is one of my nonsense. Pagtiyagaan niyo nang basahin..)

Bakit ba talaga ako ganito?
Palging nag-iisip sa iyo
Bukambibig ay laging ikaw
Tulog may ikaw and dinadalaw

Simula ng malamang may iba
Puso ko ay parang nadurog na
Laging may suot an pekeng ngiti
Upang sakit ay mawaglit sandali

Hindi man halata sa mukha ko
Pero puso ko ay laging nagdurugo
Hindi alam kung ano pang gagawin
Tadhana sigurong ika'y mahalin

(one of my hobbies is writing poems...I use it to express myself... Sa tanang na-igo..ok ra na oiez..naa pay ugma na muabot..makakita ra lagi mo og lain... KAto sang ganahan mag pahimo.. ad2a lang ko sa I-Bartlett basta di ko busy kay I'll make poems especially for you..) ;-)

What kind of Dragon are you?
Blue Dragon

You are skittish and possesive. You have a quick and short temper, and like to hold grudges. When you have something you want and someone else wants it to, you would probobly never give it up for the world.
