Reflections on Teachers and Teaching

“Teacher? They are those we see at some place called school right?”

These are commonly our first impressions. Go look at a dictionary and you will find that it means someone who teaches others or also called instructor but did it ever occur to you that it has deeper meanings? Such as second parents or guardians, somebody who you owe too much, for who you are today, someone who kept patient, molded you, and taught you that life is not that bad even if there are lots of sufferings and hardships you keep encountering. Well, better think about it…

Ever since I was young, I love to be a teacher. I can still remember how I imitate my Science teacher before. I wrote things in our wall and act as if there are kids listening to me and I often laugh remembering how crazy I look. Well, thank God all those writings are covered with paint now. Then, even now, I still love to be a teacher. Since Mr. Nazareno came to University of the Philippines High School in Visayas I kept dreaming of becoming a teacher and going to abroad and then bringing my pupils back to UP and feel proud thinking that I was once a student in this prestigious university myself. The other thing that inspires me to be a teacher is that maybe because I come from a family of teachers. My mother and my father are both teachers. Two of my uncles are teachers. My aunt is a teacher and my Grandmother was a teacher herself. Even my older cousins have taken courses in Education but they just shifted courses and got a different job. Therefore, I can say that family really influences a lot.

Then, the experience I had during the “KNOW YOUR SCHOOL DAY” Celebration was much help in fulfilling my dreams of becoming a teacher. It made me realize that being a teacher is not that easy after all. It showed me that perseverance was really needed. From just the interview, there was too much pressure. Besides that I was very hungry when I got interviewed, but I can also feel the competition and the tension on who will be chosen. Well, thank God I was chosen on being a teacher in Science C.

Being a student teacher made me a much better person. I made me more responsible in a way that I need to see to it that the students I am teaching really learned something. I also learned to be creative in the sense that I need to find different ways to make the discussions and reporting more lively so that they would always remember what they learned. So I made them jump so that the sleepiness would be gone and we also sang nursery rhymes and actions songs. We really look and sound like in kindergarten but the good thing is that we had fun. Lastly, I learned to be more cooperative. I learned to coordinate with Patrice, my co-student teacher, in many things. We agreed on the grades of the reporting and we shared the topics we need to discuss.

All in all, the activity was a success. It had molded us students to even better individuals and we learned how to treasure our beloved teachers since we experienced how difficult it is to be one.
So, have you thought about things? Well, I just hope you would also learn to love your teachers and then so realize not to be a black sheep in class. So, this is it for now… See you again and HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER VACATION!
